ANTHONY THE GREAT, FATHER OF THE MONKS
Safro

INTRODUCTION

DOXOLOGY

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory forever.
Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
O God,
you showed the way of the hermit’s life to your servant Anthony.
He followed your commandments and way and established himself
in the desert, to consecrate himself to his Lord.
He spent his days in prayer and self denial.
Through his prayer, grant that on this morning of his feast
we may praise you, your Father and your Holy Spirit,
now and forever.
Amen.

GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples,

for steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Lord God,
may we praise you in purity and holiness.
Through the intercession Anthony help us to know and
serve you in truth.
May your holy words we have so often heard, echo in our souls.
May we take up our cross and follow you.
And we shall praise and glorify you,
now and forever.
Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Only in God is my soul at rest;
from him comes my salvation.

Psalm 62
Only in God is my soul at rest;
from him comes my salvation.

He only is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all.

How long will you set upon a man and
all together beat him down
as though he were a sagging fence, a battered wall?

Truly from my place on high they plan to dislodge me;
they delight in lies;

They bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse.

Only in God be at rest, my soul,
for from him comes my hope.

He only is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed.

With God is my safety and my glory,
he is the rock of my strength; my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, O my people!
Pour out your hearts before him;

God is our refuge!
Only a breath are mortal men;
an illusion are men of rank;

In a balance they prove lighter,
all together, than a breath.

Trust not in extortion; in plunder take no empty pride;
through wealth abound, set not your heart upon it.

One thing God said: these two things which I heard:
that power belongs to God, and yours, O Lord, is kindness;
and that you render to everyone according to his deeds.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.

Antiphon:
Only in God is my soul at rest;
from him comes my salvation.

[HYMN]
The Hymn, “The Church” (page 168) may be sung after
the Psalm of the Day.

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Lord,
you guide every soul on its journey.
You guided Anthony on the way of a hermit life in the desert
and he served you in penance, prayer, self denial and solitude.
Lord God,
be for each of us the light which guides us to heaven.
We shall praise you,
now and forever.
Amen.

NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright in Christ Jesus,
our Lord.
Begotten of the Father, he manifested Himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the
radiance of his light.

Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises from us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.

His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.

Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.

He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.

Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.

Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.

Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to
the almighty Father, who,
in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with
hope and salvation.

When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in
weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.

The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the
glory of the just and upright people of the earth;
together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.

Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great
glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.

Alleluia.

[HYMN]
Either the Hymn, “The Return of Christ” (page 169) or the
Hymn, “Christ the Light” (page 169) may be sung after the
Nuhro.

THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ,
reward of those who love you and their greatest good,
after a long life of struggle you rewarded Anthony with
the glory of heaven.
Grant that we, who struggle like him,
may receive glory with you, your Father, and your Holy Spirit, forever.
Amen.

MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148

Alleluia.
Praise the Lord from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;

Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for he commanded and they were created;

He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
you sea monsters and all depths;

Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;

You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;

You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.

Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,

Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,

Praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;

His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.

Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.

Alleluia.

Psalm 149:1-6
Alleluia.
Sing to the Lord a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.

Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

For the Lord loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.

Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing joy upon their couches;

Let the high praises of God
be in their throats.

Alleluia.

Psalm 150
Alleluia.
Praise the Lord in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.

Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.

Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.

Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.

Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.

Let everything that has breath
praise the Lord!

Alleluia.

Psalm 117
Praise the Lord, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.

Alleluia.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the One who chose Anthony as Father of monks and guide of religious life;
he called monks, hermits, and ascetics to follow him in the
way he had prepared.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this morning,
and all the days of our lives,
now and forever.
Amen.

SEDRO
Anthony, your heart was filled with love of God and your spirit was filled with the wisdom of the cross.
In praise and struggle you conquered the enemy of humanity and surpassed the wise in holiness and virtue.
Even the great Athanasius marveled, took you as counselor, and preserved your life for future generations.
We too, exclaim:
Blessed are you who gave your money to the poor,
for you will have a treasure in heaven.
Blessed are you who followed the evangelical counsels.
Blessed are you who were a guide for religious houses
and hermitages.
Blessed are you, who by the guidance of the Holy Spirit,
prepared a way for consecrated life that has been
followed by generations of religious men and women.
To this day they honor you as their father and shepherd, striving to follow in your footsteps and to acquire your spirit.
Obtain for them the grace to upbuild their lives in faith, hope and charity;
to devote themselves as you did to mortification and self denial; and to struggle against worldly passions in order to acquire virtue.
With you we shall offer glory to the blessed Trinity,
now and forever.
Amen.

QOLO
O faithful Church, rejoice and sing praise in memory of Anthony,
Desert Star, Father of monks and hermits.

Holy are you, for your love Anthony left the world.
Holy are you, for he sold all to acquire you.
Holy are you, who filled him with your graces and sanctified him.

Blessed are you, because of your holiness the saints live forever.

ETRO
O God,
in memory of our holy father Anthony,
we plead for your mercy, kindness, compassion and love.
Console those who suffer,
save those who are tempted,
strengthen the faith of those who waver.
Grant perfect love to those who are filled with confusion and
victory to those who struggle.
Accord confidence and hope to the sorrowful.
We shall praise and glorify you,
now and forever.
Amen.

MAZMOORO
The Church rejoices and exalts in memory of great Anthony
and praise the One who strengthened him in combat.

In God alone my soul finds rest, from him comes my salvation,
he alone is my rock, my salvation, my fortress, I will not falter.

Blessed be Christ, our Savior and our rock.
Glory to God who has strengthened his chosen one in battle.

SCRIPTURE READING
A Reading from the Book of Proverbs
Proverbs 22: 1-11
A good name is more desirable than great riches, and high esteem, than gold and silver. Rich and poor have a common bond: the LORD is the maker of them all. The shrewd man perceives evil and hides, while simpletons continue on and suffer the penalty. The reward of humility and fear of the LORD is riches, honor and life. Thorns and snares are on the path of the crooked; he who would safeguard his life will shun them. Train a boy in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not swerve from it. The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender. He who sows iniquity reaps calamity, and the rod destroys his labors. The kindly man will be blessed, for he gives of his sustenance to the poor. Expel the arrogant man and discord goes out; strife and insult cease. The LORD loves the pure of heart; the man of winning speech has the king for his friend.
