MEMORIAL OF AN APOSTLE Safro

INTRODUCTION

DOXOLOGY

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
O God,
may we have the expectation of the prophets,
the faith of the apostles,
the witness of the martyrs,
and the patience of the confessors
that we might be worthy of the joy you have promised us in your kingdom,
and we will give you glory,
now and for ever. Amen.

GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Lord God,
you chose your apostle Saint N.,
and sent him to carry the good news, strengthened for combat and armed to give you witness.
He traveled through nations in your name and called
them to the truth.
His preaching called us to salvation with your apostles and heroic messengers.
May we keep their teaching in our hearts,
remember their precepts in our conscience,
and give witness like them in our lives
and we will praise you,
now and for ever. Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever.

Psalm 118
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his mercy endures forever.

Let the house of Israel say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

Let the House of Aaron Say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

In my straits I called upon the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me free.

The Lord is with me; I fear not;
what can man do against me?

The Lord is with me to help me,
and I shall look down upon my foes.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in man.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in princes.

All the nations encompassed me;
in the name of the Lord I crushed them.

They encompassed me on every side;
in the name of the Lord I crushed them.

They encompassed me like bees,
they flared up like fire among thorns;
in the name of the Lord I crushed them.

I was hard pressed and was falling,
but the Lord helped me.

My strength and my courage is the Lord,
and he has been my savior.

The joyful shout of victory
in the tents of the just:
“The right hand of the Lord has struck with power:
the right hand of the Lord is exalted:
the right hand of the Lord has struck with power.”

I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the Lord.

Though the Lord has indeed chastised me,
yet he has not delivered me to death.

Open to me the gates of justice;
I will enter them and give thanks to the Lord.

This gate is the Lord’s;
the just shall enter it.

I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me
and have been my savior.

The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.

By the Lord has this been done;
it is wonderful in our eyes.

This is the day the Lord has made;
let us be glad and rejoice in it.

O Lord, grant salvation!
O Lord, grant prosperity!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;
we bless you from the house of the Lord.

The Lord is God,
and he has given us light.

Join in procession with leafy boughs
up to the horns of the altar.

You are my God, an I give thanks to you;
O my God, I extol you.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his kindness endures forever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever.

[HYMN]
The Hymn, “The Church” (page 292) may be sung after the Psalm of the Day.

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Lord,
you have enlightened the world by the twelve lights
and have scattered the darkness.
They have guided the nations toward you and enlightened us by their teaching.
Help us by their example,
and strengthen us by their courage,
that we may be your apostles and witnesses,
an we will praise you,
now and for ever. Amen.

NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus, our Lord, Begotten of the Father, he manifested himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the radiance of his light.

Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises for us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.

His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.

Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.

He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.

Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.

Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to the almighty Father, who,
in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with hope and salvation.

When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.

The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the glory of the just and upright people of the earth;
together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.
Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

[HYMN]
Either the Hymn “The Return of Christ” (page 293) or the Hymn, “Christ the Light” (page 293) may be sung after the Nuhro

THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Light and Image of the Father,
you have sent your holy apostles as guides to the world.
To confound the wise, you chose the simple;
to confound the powerful, you chose the weak.
May we not glory in our weakness because it attracts your strength,
and not dwell on our ignorance because it attracts you knowledge.
We will imitate your apostles,
following in their footsteps, and joining them in giving witness to you,
now and for ever. Amen.

MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148
Alleluia.

Praise the LORD from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;

Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for he commanded and they were created;

He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.

Praise the LORD from the earth;
you see monsters and all depths;

Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;

You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;

You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.

Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,

Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,

Praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;

His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.

Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.

Alleluia.

Psalm 149: 1-6
Alleluia.

Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.

Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

For the LORD loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.

Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy upon their couches;

Let the high praises of God be in their throats.

Alleluia.

Psalm 150
Alleluia.

Praise the LORD in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.

Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.

Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.

Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.

Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.

Let everything that has breath
praise the LORD!

Alleluia.

Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Alleluia.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to him who has armed his apostles with his strength.
instructed them with his wisdom,
inflamed their hearts with his love
and crowned their struggle with his glory.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this morning,
and all the day of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.

SEDRO
Today we celebrate the memorial of the twelve apostles of Christ,
lamps that the Lord lit to guide the world.
They are physicians to whom he taught his medicine
so that they can care for the ills of humanity and bind its wounds.
They are the solid towers which are the ramparts
of the holy city,
the firm columns on which the Church rests.
Holy apostles, fathers and pillars of the Church,
on you is raised a proud and lasting structure,
by you all enemies and aggressors are repulsed,
and through you has come the light of the truth,
constancy of faith and sincerity of love.
Today and during all our lives may your prayer accompany us; may your zeal impel us to apostolic work for Christ toward those who do not know him.
When you are sitting on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel,
intercede for us with the just Judge
that with you we may enter into his heavenly kingdom, praising and glorifying him,
for ever. Amen.

QOLO
Holy are you, O God, you sent your Spirit upon the apostles at Pentecost to teach them the truth.

Holy are you, O Strong One, you gave strength to your apostles that they might travel through the world preaching the good news.

Holy are you, O Immortal One, the apostles preached your resurrection to the nations.

Today in memory of the holy apostles, the Church glorifies you; to you be glory, for ever.

ETRO
Holy apostles,
servants of the great shepherd and priests of the High Priest, through the fragrance of our incense and by the intercession of the apostles N., whose feast we celebrate today,
obtain for us the pardon of our sins and give us sincere repentance,
and we will praise and glorify him,
now and for ever. Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
The apostles went to the ends of the earth to proclaim your word and bore witness to your name, shedding their blood and interceding for us.

From the mountain tops they announced your good news and gave you glory. You placed Simon Peter as the foundation of the Church, rock of the faith.

God, you accepted the offerings of the just, in your loving kindness, accept our worship and receive us in your love.

SCRIPTURE READING
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews
Hebrews 2: 14, 3:6
Now since the children share in blood and flesh, Jesus likewise had a full share in ours, that by his death he might rob the devil, the prince of death, of his power, and free those who through fear of death had been slaves their whole life long. Surely he did not come to help angels, but rather the children of Abraham; therefore he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God on their behalf, to expiate the sins of the people. Since he was himself tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are tempted.
Therefore, holy brothers who share a heavenly calling, fix your eyes on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we acknowledge in faith, who was faithful to him who appointed him. Moses, too, “was faithful in all God’s household,” but Jesus is more worthy of honor than he, as the founder of a house is more honorable than the house itself. Every house is founded by someone, but God is the founder of all. Moses “was faithful in all God’s household” as a servant charged with the task of witnessing to what would b e spoken; but Christ was faithful as the Son placed over God’s house. It is we who are that house if we hold fast to our confidence and the hope of which we boast.

HOOTOMO
GREAT DOXOLOGY

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and joy filled hope to all.
We praise you, we adore you, we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord and Creator, King of heaven, God the Father almighty, Lord God, only Son, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son and Word of the Father,
you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sin of the world, hear us and receive our prayer.
You are seated in glory at the right hand of your Father, forgive us and have mercy on us;
For you alone are holy,

with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
At all times, and all the days of our lives, we worship you and praise your holy and blessed name,
which is and has been from age to age.
Blessed are you, Lord almighty, God of our fathers.
May your name be glorified, praised and exalted for ever.

To you be glory, praise an exaltation, God of all,
Father of truth, with the only Son and the living and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
