Saturday Evening Resurrection Sunday

RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD Ramsho

INTRODUCTION

DOXOLOGY

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
O Christ,
we have put on the new man created in your likeness
and have been decorated with the jewel of glory,
purchased with your blood.
Thus shall we celebrate your resurrection
and deserve to live with you in this world and the next where we shall glorify you, your Father and your
Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen.

GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ,
sanctify your Church,
raise it up by your cross,
give it joy through your resurrection,
and unite it to your glory,
Then in heaven we shall celebrate your
eternal passover and praise you, for ever. Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the Lord.

Psalm 118
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his mercy endures forever.

Let the house of Israel say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

Let the house of Aaron say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

In my straits I called upon the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me free.

The Lord is with me; I fear not;
what can man do against me?

The Lord is with me to help me,
and I shall look down upon my foes.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in man.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in princes.

All the nations encompassed me;
in the name of the Lord I crushed them.

They encompassed me on every side;
in the name of the Lord I crushed them.

They encompassed me like bees,
they flared up like fire among thorns;
in the name of the Lord I crushed them.

I was hard pressed and was falling,
but the Lord helped me.

My strength and my courage is the Lord,
and he has been my savior.

The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just:
“The right hand of the Lord has struck with power:
the right hand of the Lord is exalted;
the right hand of the Lord has struck with power.”

I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the Lord.

Though the Lord has indeed chastised me,
yet he has not delivered me to death.

Open to me the gates of justice;
I will enter them and give thanks to the Lord.

This gate is the Lord’s:
the just shall enter it.

I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me
and have been my savior.

The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.

By the Lord has this been done;
it is wonderful in our eyes.

This is the day the Lord has made;
let us be glad and rejoice in it.

O Lord, grant salvation!
O Lord, grant prosperity!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;
we bless you from the house of the Lord.

The Lord is God, and he has given us light.
Join in procession with leafy boughs
up to the horns of the altar.

You are my God, and I give thanks to you;
O my God, I extol you.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good:
for his kindness endures forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:
I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the Lord.

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
through your death you put the old man to death,
and through your resurrection you clothe us with the
new man.
Grant that we not celebrate your passover with the old leaven, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and justice.
May our thoughts and actions be modeled on yours;
doing the works you have shown us,
may we glorify you, with your Father and your Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen.

EVENING PSALMS
Psalm 141: 1-4
O LORD, to you I call; hasten to me;
hearken to my voice when I call upon you;

Let my prayer come like incense before you;
the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice.

O LORD, set a watch before my mouth,
a guard at the door of my lips.

Let not my heart incline to the evil
of engaging in deeds of wickedness

With men who are evildoers;
and let me not partake of their dainties.

Psalm 142
With a loud voice I cry out to the LORD;
with a loud voice I beseech the LORD.

My complaint I pour out before him;
before him I lay bare my distress.

When my spirit is faint within me,
you know my path.

In the way along which I walk
they have hid a trap for me.

I look to the right to see,
but there is no one who pays me heed.

I have lost all means of escape;
there is no one who cares for my life.

I cry out to you, O LORD:
I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land
of the living.”
Attend to my cry,
for I am brought low indeed.

Rescue me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me.

Lead me forth from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.

The just shall gather around me
when you have been good to me.

Psalm 119: 105-112
A lamp to my feet is your word,
a light to my path.

I resolve and swear
to keep your just ordinances.

I am very much afflicted;
O LORD, give me life according to your word.

Accept, O LORD, the free homage of my mouth,
and teach me your decrees.

Though constantly I take my life in my hands,
yet I forget not your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but from your precepts I have not strayed.

Your decrees are my inheritance forever;
the joy of my heart they are.

I intend in my heart to fulfill your statutes
always to the letter.

Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the good and merciful Lord: in his kindness he became incarnate among us and willingly endured death in our place.
Of his own accord, he plunged into the abyss of death, gave joy to his disciples by his resurrection,
and illumined the nations with the light of his salvation.

To him is due glory and honor this evening,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.

SEDRO
Who can praise the greatness of your mercy, O Word of God, and what voice can bless you who are above all praise?
Neither mind nor tongue can describe the marvels you have performed
on this holy day of your resurrection from the dead.
With the psalmist David, we exclaim:
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us be glad
and rejoice!”
This is the day that has no equal;
This is the great feast, crown and jewel of all feasts.
And now, Christ our God, on this day of your resurrection from the dead,
we ask you to grant us the forgiveness of our sins and faults.
Through the fragrance of this incense (our prayers), which we offer you,
grant justice to the oppressed and comfort to the afflicted.
Bring back those far away, direct those who are near, and guide those who travel.
Protect the priests, purify the deacons, and pardon the sinners; watch over the just, protect the orphans, and help the widows.
Drive away revolutions and extinguish troubles.
Remember those who have died in the faith and grant them rest in your heavenly kingdom;
may we celebrate with them the feast that never ends, and proclaim your glory, and that of your Father, and your holy and living Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.

QOLO
Holy are you, O Lord, your love urged us to renew our lives.

Holy are you, O Strong One, you were raised from the dead according to the Scriptures.

Holy are you, O Immortal One, you conquered death and destroyed its sting for ever.

By your resurrection have mercy on us, O Son of God.
Everywhere the Church adores your cross;
may it be for us a pledge of resurrection and life.

ETRO
O Lord,
you conquered death and by your resurrection raised the dead; you spread the seeds of eternal life on those who rest in your hope.
Now receive our incense and our prayers on the day of your glorious resurrection.
On the day of our resurrection may we hear your voice calling your elect to your kingdom,
so that we may praise you, with your Father, and your Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
He remained three days in the tomb and his soul descended to visit the just who were resting in death.

He was raised up on the third day as he had foretold, and his resurrection is the pledge of the resurrection of the dead.

O Christ, on the day of judgment, grant that we may be worthy of that resurrection of which your glorious resurrection is the model.

SYNAXARION
Today the Church and her children rejoice for our Lord and Savior has risen from the dead. The resurrection of the Lord is the central event of our salvation, the one that gives meaning to who we are and what we do. Every celebration of the eucharist and the other mysteries refers to it as the source of inspiration and meaning.
The resurrection is the feast of feasts, the queen of all feasts. Originally the Church celebrated only one feast, the resurrection itself, which was recalled and renewed each Sunday at the celebration of the Divine Mysteries. Soon, however, it began to recall the passover of the Lord and his victorious resurrection in a special way once a year, in addition to the weekly commemoration of the

resurrection. Eventually this annual celebration of the Lord’s resurrection was prepared for by a season of prayer, fasting and penance—Lent, and the feast itself was extended for fifty days.
The Church, thus, now celebrates the resurrection of the Lord for a week of weeks (fifty days): from the Sunday of the Resurrection to Pentecost Sunday (the fiftieth day).
Today’s feast is one of joy and peace:
Peace to those who are far and
good hope to those who are near.
For Christ has risen from the grave
and has gathered those who were
scattered and given them joy.
The joy and peace that flow from the Lord’s resurrection are expressed today by the rite of peace which follows the gospel in the Divine Mysteries. The cross is removed from the tomb where it has rested since Great Friday and is draped in white. It is carried through the Church accompanied by hymns of praise and joy. The priest solemnly blesses the congregation with the glorious cross and then presents it to them that they might adore it.
By his living cross Christ has saved us from going astray and given us a way to heaven.
Through the cross peace and harmony reign among God’s people and we are led to perfection.
And so filled with peace and with joyful hearts we proclaim: A glorious morning has dawned,
and night has fled.
Light has conquered,
and night has been destroyed.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the First Letter to the Corinthians
1 Corinthians 15: 1-11
Now I am reminding you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures; that he appeared to Kephas, then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me. For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the

church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been ineffective. Indeed, I have toiled harder than all of them; not I, however, but the grace of God that is with me.
Therefore, whether it be I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
A Reading from the Gospel of John
John 20: 1-9
On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

SUPPLICATION
Cry no more, Mary, for Christ is truly risen.

Christ is risen, let all peoples rejoice.

In his rising he has shone like the sun and the
armies of darkness are blinded.

His wounds are healed, but not those of the unbelievers.

David summoned him: Arise and conquer in the combat!
Immediately he awakened himself, like one arising from sleep.

In three days he fulfilled his promise, the night of tears gives way to perfect joy.

Our sadness is transformed into joy
and the joy of the unbelievers is darkened.

The aroma of the perfume of the resurrection is sent forth as a fragrance of lavender.

Peter and John witness to the resurrection;
he has not let his beloved taste corruption for ever.

Then why are you troubled, O apostles, for Jerusalem and its environs announce peace to you:
Peace be with you, take courage, your guardian has finished sleeping;
gather together again around your shepherd,
for the time of gathering the flock is near.

O Hell, where is your victory; death, where is your sting?
Woe to you, O judges, on the day of judgment:
You wished to conceal the Sun. Behold, he places you in the darkness.

His resurrection shows itself as a fire on the hill,
Thomas, come, put in your finger and know that Christ is truly risen.

O Virgin, your first glorious Mystery fills the world with joy; The Mighty One who died rises victorious, clothed with astonishing power.

Mary, cry no more; Mary, throw away your perfume; Mary, Jesus your beloved, is near you.

Go, announce to the apostles that which I told them before my crucifixion.

HOOTOMO
Let us confess, adore, and praise the holy and glorious Trinity: Father, Son, + and Holy Spirit.

TRISAGION

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Holy are you, O God;
Holy are you, O Strong One;
Holy are you, O Immortal One;
have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.
Lord, forgive us and have mercy on us.
Lord, hear us and have mercy on us.
Lord, accept our worship and our prayers.
Lord, come to our assistance and have mercy on us.

LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who are in heaven,
hallowed be your name;
your kingdom come;
your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

O Lord
the night and the day are yours;
you uphold the light and the sun.
Through your power you direct the sequence of the seasons.
O Lord,
you have brought the day to its close and called forth the night.
Be for us that great Day that never ends.
In the evening let your light shine in our hearts,
and in the darkness of the night,
enlighten us with the knowledge of your truth.
And so, through all the days of our lives,
we shall praise you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
Amen.

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE
Let us thank God for all the graces he has bestowed on us this day which has passed in calm and peace.
Let us recall our failings against the commandments of God and the Church in thought, word, deed, or omission.

We ask for God’s pardon as we pray.

“Forgive us, Jesus!”

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Glory be to you, O Lord.
Glory be to you, O Lord.
Glory be to you, O Lord.

God,
Father in heaven,
by your living and holy name,
keep us from evil and lead us not into temptation:
for we call upon you, O Lord, our God, our constant hope, glory to you for ever.
O Lord, our Lord,
may our humble worship be pleasing to you;
may our prayers come before you and our actions give
you honor.
Let your mercy, kindness, help, grace and divine love be poured abundantly upon us poor sinners,
both in heaven and on the earth
which you have created in your goodness.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever.
Amen.

DISMISSAL
Peace be with you.
And also with you.

O God,
through the prayers of your Mother and the saints who have believed in you;
through the prayers of the prophets, apostles, martyrs and confessors;
through the prayers of the just, the priests, the holy fathers, the pastors and doctors of true faith;
through the prayers of N., Pope of Rome, N., our Patriarch, and N., our Bishop,
forgive your people and have mercy on your flock.
May God bless, forgive, sanctify, purify, and keep each of the faithful united with us in this spiritual office.
May mercy and compassion be upon us and all the faithful who dwell here.

May peaceful rest be granted to those who have died in the faith.
May the faithful who live here experience the protection of his victorious cross.
May we and all his servants who adore him with bowed head, receive the mercy of the holy and glorious Trinity:
Father, Son, + and Holy Spirit,
to whom be glory now and for ever.
Amen.

May God forgive your sins,
pardon your failings,
and deliver you from the power of the enemy.
May he grant you the remission of your offenses.
Go in peace, and pray to Christ for me.
