WEDNESDAY OF PASSION WEEK Ramsho (Tuesday Evening)

WEDNESDAY OF PASSION WEEK Ramsho

INTRODUCTION

DOXOLOGY

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
O Christ,
on this day fill our hearts and spirits
with the memory of your passion.
We live it with you hour by hour
and we follow you from place to place.
We do this because in each place you left something
and each hour has given you its portion of the passion, to the point of your death on the cross.
May we reap from them the inexhaustible fruits and
teachings,
which will be a source of spiritual life flowing to
eternal life. Amen
GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.

FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
may we contemplate your passion
in order to draw from its inexhaustible treasure,
which is a fine pearl and the source of life.
Thus, filled with wisdom, strength and perseverance,
we shall glorify you,
now and for ever. Amen.

PSALMODY
PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup.

Psalm 16
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.
Apart from you I have no good.”

How wonderfully has he made me cherish
the holy ones who are in his land!

They multiply their sorrows
who court other gods.

Blood libations to them I will not pour out,
nor will I take their names upon my lips.

O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.

For me the measuring lines have fallen on pleasant sites;
fair to me indeed is my inheritance.

I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.

I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.

Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence;

Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.

You will show me the path to life,
fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:
O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup.

HYMN
Sinners, what crime have we committed against the Son of almighty God?
Behold his hands, driven with nails.
Behold them and let your tears wash them.
With a broken heart and contemplative spirit, hold them..
Beseech mercy for the pardon of his precious blood.
Wash his wounds with abundant tears.

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ,
may the punishment you suffered not distract us from
reflecting upon ourselves.
Our sins merit tears
and your words to the daughters of Jerusalem apply well to us:
“Do not cry for me, but for yourselves and your children.”
Grant us sincere tears in sorrow for our sins,
that we may obtain the mercy you accord repentant sinners.
We give you glory,
now and for ever. Amen.

EVENING PSALMS
Psalm 141: 1-4
O LORD, to you I call; hasten to me;
hearken to my voice when I call upon you;

Let my prayer come like incense before you;
the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice.

O LORD, set a watch before my mouth,
a guard at the door of my lips.

Let not my heart incline to the evil
of engaging in deeds of wickedness

With men who are evildoers;
and let me not partake of their dainties.

Psalm 142
With a loud voice I cry out to the LORD;
with a loud voice I beseech the LORD.

My complaint I pour out before him;
before him I lay bare my distress.

When my spirit is faint within me,
you know my path.

In the way along which I walk
they have hid a trap for me.

I look to the right to see,
but there is no one who pays me heed.

I have lost all means of escape;
there is no one who cares for my life.

I cry out to you, O LORD:
I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land
of the living.”
Attend to my cry,
for I am brought low indeed.

Rescue me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me.

Lead me forth from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.

The just shall gather around me
when you have been good to me.

Psalm 119: 105-112
A lamp to my feet is your word,
a light to my path.

I resolve and swear
to keep your just ordinances.

I am very much afflicted;
O LORD, give me life according to your word.

Accept, O LORD, the free homage of my mouth,
and teach me your decrees.

Though constantly I take my life in my hands,
yet I forget not your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but from your precepts I have not strayed.

Your decrees are my inheritance forever;
the joy of my heart they are.

I intend in my heart to fulfill your statutes
always to the letter.

Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

[SOOGHITO/HYMN]
O Lord, we have battled in your arena to the point of exhaustion.
We have borne the day of combat and the heat of ordeal.
In the service of your covenant, we have kept watch
during the night, confident in the fulfillment of your promise, We have made use of our talents with no concern for the pain.
On the Day of reckoning, when all will be laid before your throne of judgment, in your kindness, do not forget
what we have endured.
We belong to the Church, to which you have entrusted the treasure of hope;
Do not shame us as lazy servants or strangers,
but open your door for us that we may enter into the
dwelling of your chosen ones.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory an honor to the Divine Physician.
He came to heal our spiritual and physical wounds,
clothed himself in our humanity,
and assumed our wounds and sufferings.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this evening,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.

SEDRO
O Divine Physician,
the crowds came to you
when they heard the good news of your coming;
when they learned that you were gentle and humble
of heart;
when you saw that you knew all and could do all.
They brought with them all those suffering from sickness and afflictions.
Wherever you went, they searched you out
and threw themselves at your feet.
They entered crowded houses to see
and the crowds on the street pressed upon you from all sides.
They followed you into the desert and isolated places and disturbed your retreats.
Whoever asked for anything,
and hoped in you, was not disappointed.
You, the Divine Physician, looked upon them with mercy and compassion.
A simple word from your mouth and sickness was cured, the dead revived and the sinner was purified.
This is just as your apostle Peter said to you:
“You have the words of eternal life.”
At the time of your passion,
the sinful woman came to you with a jar of perfume.
As a sign of her repentance and love
and in preparation for your burial,
she poured it on your head and shed tears on your feet.
O Lord,
accept the offerings of those who venerate you.
They approach your altar,
unite themselves to the sacrifice of the cross,

and pray for peace in the world,
for the unity of believers,
for the evangelization of all peoples,
and for priestly and religious vocations.
For all our spiritual and corporal needs,
we have only you, our Divine Physician.
We glorify and praise you, your Father and your Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

QOLO
Sinners, approach the Divine Physician with your sins.
In your place, he will take them before God
and will wash them away with his blood.

At the foot of the cross,
pour out tears of repentance,
just as the sinful woman poured out perfume on Jesus’
head.

Glory to the One who, in his mercy,
accepted the jar of perfume,
accepts the tears of the penitent,
and hears the requests and prayers of those who beseech him.

ETRO
O Christ,
on this day of your passion,
accept our prayers as your accepted the perfume
of the penitent sinner.
Heal our souls as you did her’s,
so that we may glorify you with her,
now and for ever. Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
Today, our Lord says to his apostles:
“Know that the Passover comes in two days and
the Son of Man will be given up to be crucified.”

At all times, I keep the Lord before me.
He is at my right hand and I shall not waver.

O Lord, the Church is saddened by your passion;
at your death, it mourns.
May it rejoice in your resurrection
and glorify you for ever.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Book of Job
Job 1: 6-21
One day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came among them. And the LORD said to Satan, “Whence do you come?” Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “From roaming the earth and patrolling it.” And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?
earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?” But Satan answered the LORD and said, “Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing? Have you not surrounded him and his family and all that he has with your protection? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock are spread over the land. But now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face.”
And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand upon his person.” So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. And so one day, while his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the asses grazing beside them, and the Sabeans carried them off in a raid. They put the herdsmen to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, another came and said, “Lightning has fallen from heaven and struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, another came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three columns, seized the camels, carried them off, and put those tending them to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, another came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, when suddenly a great wind came across the desert and smote the four corners of the house. It fell upon the young people and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
Then Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair. He cast himself prostrate upon the ground, and said, “Naked I came forth from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I go back again. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!”

A Reading from the Book of Wisdom
Wisdom 2:
12-22
Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, Reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD. To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us, Because his life is not like other men’s, and different are his ways. He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him. For if the just one be the son of God, he will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. With revilement and torture let us put him to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.” These were their thoughts, but they erred; for their wickedness blinded them, And they knew not the hidden counsels of God; neither did they count on a recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls’ reward.
A Reading from the Gospel of Mark
Mark 14: 15-15:15
Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there.” The disciples then went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover. When it was evening, he came with the Twelve. And as they reclined at table and were eating, Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” They began to be distressed and to say to him, one by one, “Surely it is not I?” He said to them, “One of the Twelve, the one who dips with me into the dish. For the Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.” While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will have your faith shaken, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be dispersed.’ But after I have been raised up, I shall go before you to Galilee.” Peter said to him, “Even though all should have their faith shaken, mine will not be.” Then Jesus said to him, “Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times.” But he vehemently replied, “Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all spoke similarly. Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed.
Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch.” He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass by him; he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will.” When he returned he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Withdrawing again, he prayed, saying the same thing. Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open and did not know what to answer him. He returned a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. See, my betrayer is at hand.” Then, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who had come from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
His betrayer had arranged a signal with them, saying, “The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him and lead him away securely.” He came and immediately went over to him and said, “Rabbi.” And he kissed him. At this they laid hands on him and arrested him. One of the bystanders drew his sword, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his ear.
Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs, to seize me? Day after day I was with you teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me; but that the scriptures may be fulfilled.” And they all left him and fled.
Now a young man followed him wearing nothing but a linen cloth about his body. They seized him, but he left the cloth behind and ran off naked. They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. Peter followed him at a distance into the high priest’s courtyard and was seated with the guards, warming himself at the fire. The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none.
Many gave false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. Some took the stand and testified falsely against him, alleging, “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands and within three days I will build another not made with hands.’
” Even so their testimony did not agree.

The high priest rose before the assembly and questioned Jesus, saying, “Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?” But he was silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him and said to him, “Are you the Messiah, the son of the Blessed One?” Then Jesus answered, “I am; and ‘you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.’ ” At that the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as deserving to die.

EPHREMIAT
Pilate says: “People of Israel, behold your king!”
As you see, he is crowned with thorns and is mocked
by the soldiers.
This is because of your conduct and the darkness of
your hearts.
You have strayed from justice and the law.
See the mire caused by the envious and the wrathful.

A crown of thorns surrounds his head,
a sublime proof that his glory and power endures.
His head is crowned with thorns and his blood flows.
Blood mixed with tears, marring his beautiful face.

What thorns, what injustice, what humiliation!
What an unjust judgment!
The crown of thorns cuts your head and my
afflicted heart.
The blood which flows over your eyes
blocks my sight.

Mary receives a new sadness which tears at her heart.
She hastens to learn who drew his blood.
When she saw his beautiful face among the others,
she cried out to herself:
“My child! Look at your face that was once covered with majesty!”
