Monday Morning of Passion Week

MONDAY OF PASSION WEEK Safro
INTRODUCTION
DOXOLOGY
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
O Lord,
this morning
may we contemplate your passion which saves us;
implant it in our hearts and help us understand your
immense love for us.
We shall live our lives thanking you for your Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Son of the Father,
you took the condition of a slave and were cursed for us in order to return us our lost freedom.
Free us now from our passions and worldly desires.
We shall lean on you and walk with you
on the path to Golgotha and the kingdom,
you who live and reign with the Father and Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
The Lord watches over the lives of the wholehearted;
their inheritance lasts forever.

Psalm 37: 1-18
Be not vexed over evildoers;
nor jealous of those who do wrong;

For like grass they quickly wither,
and like green herbs they wilt.

Trust in the Lord and do good,
that you may dwell in the land and enjoy security.

Take delight in the Lord,
and he will grant you your heart’s requests.

Commit to the Lord your way;
trust in him, and he will act.

He will make justice dawn for you like the light;
bright as the noonday shall be your vindication.

Leave it to the Lord,
and wait for him,

Be not vexed at the successful path
of the man who does malicious deeds.

Give up your anger, and forsake wrath;
be not vexed, it will only harm you.

For evildoers shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the Lord shall possess the land.

Yet a little while, and the wicked man shall be no more;
though you mark his place he will not be there.

But the meek shall possess the land,
they shall delight in abounding peace.

The wicked man plots against the just
and gnashes his teeth at them;

But the Lord laughs at him,
for he sees that his day is coming.

A sword the wicked draw; they bend their bow
to bring down the afflicted and the poor,
to slaughter those whose path is right.

But their swords shall pierce their own hearts,
and their bows shall be broken.

Better is the scanty store of the just
than the great wealth of the wicked.

For the power of the wicked shall be broken,
but the Lord supports the just.

The Lord watches over the lives of the wholehearted;
their inheritance lasts forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:
The Lord watches over the lives of the wholehearted;
their inheritance lasts forever.

HYMN
When the Church saw the brilliant Sun of Justice
hanging on the wood of the Cross,
she was filled with sadness and cried abundantly.
Seeing his wounds and the marks of the nails,
she knelt and said to him:
“My beloved, my children and I adore you who died
for us.”

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ,
your light shines on the world and your brightness
dispels the darkness.
May it enlighten our hearts and our spirits,
so that we may understand your passion and share in it.
We shall go forth to meet you, our Lord and King,
and praise you for ever. Amen.

NUHRO (HYMN OF LIGHT)
The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus, our Lord, Begotten of the Father, he manifested himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the radiance of his light.

Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises for us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.

His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.

Creatures lying in darkness from ancient times are clothed in light.
The dead arise from the dust and sing because they have a Savior.

He brings salvation and grants us life.
He ascends to his Father on high.
He will return in glorious splendor and shed his light on those gazing upon him.

Our King comes in majestic glory,
Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.
He will indeed rejoice us with his marvelous light.

Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to the almighty Father, who,
in an outpouring of love, sent him to us, to fill us with hope and salvation.

When he manifests himself, the saints awaiting him in weariness and sorrow,
will go forth to meet him with lighted lamps.
The angels and guardians of heaven will rejoice in the glory of the just and upright people of the earth;
together, crowned with victory, they will sing hymns and psalms.

Stand up then and be ready!
Give thanks to our King and Savior, who will come in great glory to gladden us with his marvelous light in his kingdom.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

THIRD PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ our Lord,
may we be like the wise virgins
and store away the oil of good works,
so that when we go to meet you at your Second Coming, we shall not be like the foolish virgins and remain outside in the darkness.
Instead, may we join the bridal procession
and enter the chamber of light,
where we shall praise you, with your Father and your Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen.

MORNING PSALMS
Psalm 148
Alleluia.

Praise the LORD from the heavens,
praise him in the heights;

Praise him, all you his angels,
praise him, all you his hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for he commanded and they were created;

He established them forever and ever;
he gave them a duty which shall not pass away.

Praise the LORD from the earth;
you sea monsters and all depths;

Fire and hail, snow and mist,
storm winds that fulfill his word;

You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;

You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.

Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,

Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,

Praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;

His majesty is above earth and heaven,
and he has lifted up the horn of his people.

Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.

Alleluia.

Psalm 149: 1-6
Alleluia.

Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.

Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

For the LORD loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.

Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy upon their couches;

Let the high praises of God be in their throats.

Alleluia.

Psalm 150
Alleluia.

Praise the LORD in his sanctuary,
praise him in the firmament of his strength.

Praise him for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his sovereign majesty.

Praise him with the blast of the trumpet,
praise him with lyre and harp.

Praise him with timbrel and dance,
praise him with strings and pipe.

Praise him with sounding cymbals,
praise him with clanging cymbals.

Let everything that has breath
praise the LORD!

Alleluia.

Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy toward us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the King,
who entered his city in triumphal procession
to die on the cross of infamy.
He did all this out of obedience to the Father
and love for humanity.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this morning,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.

SEDRO
O Lord,
the events of this week were no surprise:
confiding in your disciples as beloved friends,
you warned them of what would take place.
You told them of the baptism with which you wished
to be baptized,
a baptism in your own blood;
of the temple that would be destroyed,

the temple of your own body;
of your sojourn of three days,
a sojourn in the womb of the earth.
Your disciples did not understand all this,
and you were saddened.
You complained of the hardness of their hearts,
the dullness of their spirits.
However, you continued to proceed on the path of salvation, facing the passion willingly and out of obedience to the Father in order to redeem humanity.
You are the Messiah who fulfilled the signs and the prophets.
You are the Son who willed to suffer and to die,
offering yourself on behalf of your friends.
You died in your humanity in order to give us life in your divinity.
And now we gather this week in the monasteries, convents and churches;
we raise our prayers before your cross and recall you passion and death.
Grant us your light to illuminate the true path
and your strength to bear your cross.
Thus, having shared in your passion,
we shall praise you, your Father and your Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen.

QOLO
Our Lord revealed the secret of his passion and death to his disciples:
the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes and they will condemn him to death.

Blessed is the One who desired to accept the passion and willed to die on a cross.

ETRO
O Lord,
you are the Lamb whose blood washed away the stain of our sins;
you established the new covenant, a covenant of love whereby we become children of God.
Through your passion and death, may we avoid sin and be faithful to that covenant.
Then we shall be with you in the glory of your Father and your Holy Spirit,
for ever. Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
Our Savior enters the city of Jerusalem that killed the prophets and stoned those sent by God.

The evildoers saw the Son and heir, were filled with hate and plotted to kill him.

The prophets rejoice because their prophecies are fulfilled.

The priests are joyful because the hour of salvation has come.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Acts
24: 1-9
Five days later the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an advocate, a certain Tertullus, and they presented formal charges against Paul to the governor. When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, “Since we have attained much peace through you, and reforms have been accomplished in this nation through your provident care, we acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all gratitude. But in order not to detain you further, I ask you to give us a brief hearing with your customary graciousness. We found this man to be a pest; he creates dissension among Jews all over the world and is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazoreans.
He even tried to desecrate our temple, but we arrested him. If you examine him you will be able to learn from him for yourself about everything of which we are accusing him.”
The Jews also joined in the attack and asserted that these things were so.
A Reading from the Gospel of Mark
Mark 14: 10-52
Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went off to the chief priests to hand him over to them. When they heard him they were pleased and promised to pay him money. Then he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”He sent two of his disciples and said

to them, “Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, “The Teacher says, ‘Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ ” Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready.
Make the preparations for us there.” The disciples then went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
When it was evening, he came with the Twelve. And as they reclined at table and were eating, Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” They began to be distressed and to say to him, one by one, “Surely it is not I?” He said to them, “One of the Twelve, the one who dips with me into the dish. For the Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will have your faith shaken, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be dispersed.’ But after I have been raised up, I shall go before you to Galilee.” Peter said to him, “Even though all should have their faith shaken, mine will not be.” Then Jesus said to him, “Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times.” But he vehemently replied, “Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all spoke similarly. Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed. Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch.” He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass by him; he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will.” When he returned he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”
Withdrawing again, he prayed, saying the same thing. Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open and did not know what to answer him.

He returned a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. See, my betrayer is at hand.” Then, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who had come from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. His betrayer had arranged a signal with them, saying, “The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him and lead him away securely.” He came and immediately went over to him and said, “Rabbi.” And he kissed him. At this they laid hands on him and arrested him. One of the bystanders drew his sword, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his ear. Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs, to seize me? Day after day I was with you teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me; but that the scriptures may be fulfilled.” And they all left him and fled. Now a young man followed him wearing nothing but a linen cloth about his body. They seized him, but he left the cloth behind and ran off naked.
