O Lord,
at your Second Coming, may we go forth to meet you
as the people greeted you at your first coming.

as they carried palms and olive branches shouting:
“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!”
With you may we enter the heavenly Jerusalem and proclaim: Blessings, glory, wisdom, mercy, honor, power and might to our Lord, for ever. Amen.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Christ our King,
may all who celebrate this feast bless you as the
children blessed you.
May the day come when all people will
bless you, crying out with one voice:
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,
the King of Israel, the Savior of the world!”
May we glorify you, with your Father and Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord.

Psalm 118:14-29
My strength and my courage is the Lord,
and he has been my savior.

The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just:
“The right hand of the Lord has struck with power,
the right hand of the Lord is exalted;
the right hand of the Lord has struck with power.”

I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the Lord.

Though the Lord has indeed chastised me,
yet he has not delivered me to death.

Open to me the gates of justice;
I will enter them and give thanks to the Lord.

This gate is the Lord’s;
the just shall enter it.

I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me
and have been my savior.

The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.

By the Lord has this has been done;
it is wonderful in our eyes.

This is the day the Lord has made;
let us be glad and rejoice in it.

O Lord, grant salvation!
O Lord, grant prosperity!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;
we bless you from the house of the Lord.

The Lord is God, and he has given us light.

Join in procession with leafy boughs
up to the horns of the altar.

You are my God, and I give thanks to you;
O my God, I extol you.

Give thanks to the Lord, for his is good;
for his kindness endures forever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:
Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord.

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,
may we carry your good news to all peoples
and preach your name among the nations.
May our lives and our words be a living witness to you, our lips and hearts offer you glory and praise,
so that the whole world may know you are the One
who comes in the name of the Lord.
To you be praise and glory,
for ever. Amen.

EVENING PSALMS
Psalm 141: 1-4
O LORD, to you I call; hasten to me;
hearken to my voice when I call upon you;

Let my prayer come like incense before you;
the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice.

O LORD, set a watch before my mouth,
a guard at the door of my lips.

Let not my heart incline to the evil
of engaging in deeds of wickedness

With men who are evildoers;
and let me not partake of their dainties.

Psalm 142
With a loud voice I cry out to the LORD;
with a loud voice I beseech the LORD.

My complaint I pour out before him;
before him I lay bare my distress.

When my spirit is faint within me,
you know my path.

In the way along which I walk
they have hid a trap for me.

I look to the right to see,
but there is no one who pays me heed.

I have lost all means of escape;
there is no one who cares for my life.

I cry out to you, O LORD:
I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land
of the living.”
Attend to my cry,
for I am brought low indeed.

Rescue me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me.

Lead me forth from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.

The just shall gather around me
when you have been good to me.

Psalm 119: 105-112
A lamp to my feet is your word,
a light to my path.

I resolve and swear
to keep your just ordinances.

I am very much afflicted;
O LORD, give me life according to your word.

Accept, O LORD, the free homage of my mouth,
and teach me your decrees.

Though constantly I take my life in my hands,
yet I forget not your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but from your precepts I have not strayed.

Your decrees are my inheritance forever;
the joy of my heart they are.

I intend in my heart to fulfill your statutes
always to the letter.

Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

[SOOGHITO/HYMN]
O Lord, we have battled in your arena to the point of exhaustion.
We have borne the day of combat and the heat of ordeal.
In the service of your covenant, we have kept watch
during the night, confident in the fulfillment of your promise, We have made use of our talents with no concern for the pain.
On the Day of reckoning, when all will be laid before your throne of judgment, in your kindness, do not forget
what we have endured.
We belong to the Church, to which you have entrusted the treasure of hope;
Do not shame us as lazy servants or strangers,
but open your door for us that we may enter into the
dwelling of your chosen ones.

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the King of kings who is exalted on high and is seated on the heavenly throne.
To him the cherubim sing: “Holy, Holy, Holy,”
and the seraphim sing:
“Blessed is the Lord and great is his name.”
On this day he wished to ride a donkey and enter Jerusalem amidst the cheering of the children.
To the Good One is due glory and honor this evening,
and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.

SEDRO
Glory to you, the almighty One, you humbled yourself
and are the hidden and revealed incarnate Word.
On this day you came among your people and fulfilled all that was written of you in the scriptures.
You rode a colt of a donkey,
surrounded by children carrying olive branches and joyfully shouting:
“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!”
On this festival day of the palms you fulfilled the sayings of the prophets:
Jacob, the leader of the twelve tribes, announced that the scepter would not leave Judea until the arrival of the awaited One.
Zechariah told the daughter Sion to rejoice:
“Your king shall come to you, humble and riding on a donkey!”
David described the shouts of the children:
“Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings you have fashioned praise.”
Isaiah calls to Jerusalem:
“Awake, Awake! Put on your strength, O Sion:
put on your glorious garments, O Jerusalem, holy city.”
We who today celebrate this feast join our voices to those of the children and proclaim:
“Hosanna to the son of David!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
May your name be blessed on earth as the angels bless it in heaven.

May your name be blessed by all mouths as the mouths the children of Jerusalem blessed you.
May your name be blessed by the hymns of brothers and sisters in their monasteries and convents.
May your name be blessed by the prayers of all Christians.
May your name be blessed in the churches and sanctuaries, in the homes and in the streets,
in public and in private,
in life and at the hour of death.
May your name be blessed,
you who grant mercy and forgive sins,
you who cure illnesses and revive the dead,
you who save the world and redeem us.
Image and splendor of the Almighty,
grant wisdom to our leaders, justice to our priests,
perfection to brothers and holiness to sisters.
Grant that the rich have concern for the poor and that the poor be rich in you.
May the elderly have an evangelical spirit,
and may children imitate your childhood,
so that we might proclaim with our hearts and mouths:
“May your name be blessed and your kingdom come,”
now and for ever. Amen.

QOLO
Today, Christ the king enters Jerusalem, riding a donkey.

People go to meet him with olive branches and palms and the children shout:

Today the angels in heaven join with the shouts of the children:
“Hosanna in the highest to the king of heaven and earth!

Today the Church sings and its children proclaim:
“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
ETRO
O God,
as you accepted the praise of the children who welcomed you, in your mercy accept with our incense the prayers that we raise to you on the day of your entrance into Jerusalem.

May our praise always be in our hearts and on our lips, so that one day with the angels we shall praise you, your Father and Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
The One who rides the clouds, today rides a donkey.
He whom heaven and earth bless,
is blessed today by the mouths of children.

The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Glory to you who gave up the chariot of the cherubim
to ride on a poor donkey.

SYNAXARION
This Sunday takes its name from the joyful shouts of the children of Israel as Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem in triumph, crying out: “Hosanna”, which means, “Save us now, we pray!” They also shouted out: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” Jesus was thus greeted as the Savior of Israel, the Messiah and Lord.
The procession with the psalms and olive branches that takes place on the day, originated in Jerusalem as a commemoration of Christ’s triumphant entrance into the Holy City. By the fourth century the Church in Jerusalem gathered each year to recall the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem. The faithful gathered on the Mount of Olives with their bishop.
There they sang psalms and hymns and listened to readings from the Old Testament and to the gospel account of the Lord’s entry into the city. Late in the afternoon they went in procession from the Mount of Olives to the city of Jerusalem. The parents carried their children on their shoulders and all waved branches of palm and olive trees as they cried out: “Hosanna!” and “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Upon entering the city they went to the Church of the Resurrection, which was built over the tomb of the Lord, where they ultimately celebrated the eucharist.
As we prepare for the great week of the Lord’s passion and death, we begin by recalling that Jesus was first rightly greeted by the crowds as their Messiah. These same crowds that today cried “Hosanna,” would later shout, “Crucify him” However, the Lord’s disciples, who today rejoiced over the reception that he received from the crowds, would desert him and hide in fear. And yet Jesus remained Messiah even on the cross for his true glory came not at the hands of the people, but from his Father. As we follow the Lord on the way to the cross, may we remain ever faithful to him who is our Savior and Lord.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
A Reading from the Prophet Zechariah
Zechariah 9:9-17
Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, Meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass. He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; The warrior’s bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you, for the blood of your covenant with me, I will bring forth your prisoners from the dungeon. In the return to the fortress of the waiting prisoners, this very day, I will return you double for your exile. For I will bend Judah as my bow, I will arm myself with Ephraim; I will arouse your sons, O Zion, [against your sons, O Yavan,] and I will use you as a warrior’s sword. The LORD shall appear over them, and his arrow shall shoot forth as lightning; The LORD God shall sound the trumpet, and come in a storm from the south. The LORD
of hosts shall be a shield over them, they shall overcome sling stones and trample them underfoot; They shall drink blood like wine, till they are filled with it like libation bowls, like the corners of the altar. And the LORD, their God, shall save them on that day, his people, like a flock. For they are the jewels in a crown raised aloft over his land. For what wealth is theirs, and what beauty! grain that makes the youths flourish, and new wine, the maidens!

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew
Matthew
21: 1-11
When they drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them here to me.
And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, ‘The master has need of them.’ Then he will send them at once.” This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: “Say to daughter Zion, ‘Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ” The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them. They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them. The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, “Who is this?” And the crowds replied, “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee.”
