O God,
purify our souls by a chaste fast,

FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
O Lord,

and with the help of your grace, live according to your gospel.

Psalm 51: 3-19
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.

Lord have mercy on us and help us!
This evening we offer our fasting our prayer and our mortifications
asking you to kindly accept and bless this time of penitence;
accept it as you accepted the fasting and prayers of the ancient fathers,
and we thank you and praise you , now and for ever and ever.

O God, full of tenderness,
you have given your Church this season of Lent,
this time of blessing, healing and reconciliation.
O Christ, our friend,
by your own fasting and self denial you taught us to fast;
you wished us to understand the essential purpose of life,
the meaning of the world and its existence,
and the greatness of your love and goodness.
Pour forth your mighty repent;
soften the hearts of sinners, your children,
and they will return to you, weeping with sorrow and
broken in heart;
then they will know and love you.
Let us meditate on this Lent and its fruits:
fasting and prayer purify the soul and make the body chaste;
fasting and prayer spread a marvelous light, the light of Christ, on those who fast and pray;
fasting and prayer raise the spirit, restrain the passions and the mercy from on high pours forth;
fasting and prayer dispel evil spirits
and the Holy Spirit dwells in the soul created to be the temple of God.
O God,
may we praise you with pure lips
and with angelic hymns that come from chaste hearts.
May we meditate upon your fasting,
and follow your path that we may attain you and praise you, for ever.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
Genesis 8: 1-22
and then God remembered Noah and all the animals, wild and tame, that were with him in the ark. So God made a wind sweep over the earth, and the waters began to subside.
The fountains of the abyss and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the downpour from the sky was held back. Gradually the waters receded from the earth. At the end of one hundred and fifty days, the waters had so diminished that, in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. The waters continued to diminish until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains appeared. At the end of forty days Noah opened the hatch he had made in the ark, and he sent out a raven, to see if the waters had lessened on the earth. It flew back and forth until the waters dried off from the earth. Then he sent out a dove, to see if the waters had lessened on the earth. But the dove could find no place to alight and perch, and it returned to him in the ark, for there was water all over the earth. Putting out his hand, he caught the dove and drew it back to him inside the ark.
He waited seven days more and again sent the dove out from the ark. In the evening the dove came back to him, and there in its bill was a plucked-off olive leaf! So Noah knew that the waters had lessened on the earth. He waited still another seven days and then released the dove once more; and this time it did not come back. In the six hundred and first year of Noah’s life, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the water began to dry up on the earth. Noah then removed the covering of the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was drying up. In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. Then God said to Noah “Go out of the ark, together with your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives. Bring out with you every living thing that is with you — all bodily creatures, be they birds or animals or creeping things of the earth
— and let them abound on the earth, breeding and multiplying on it.” So Noah came out, together with his wife and his sons and his sons’ wives; and all the animals, wild and tame, all the birds, and all the creeping creatures of the earth left the ark, one kind after another. Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and choosing from every clean animal and every clean bird, he offered holocausts on the altar. When the
LORD smelled the sweet odor, he said to himself: “Never again will I doom the earth because of man, since the desires of man’s heart are evil from the start; nor will I ever again strike down all living beings, as I have done. As long as the earth lasts, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, Summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”
SUPPLICATION
O Son, by your fast you saved the Church from error;
hear supplications and have mercy on us.
You reconciled heaven and earth,
grant peace to your Church and keep her children in the light of the cross.
How beautiful the fast and how quickly justice joins it;
let us not leave your company. Share your food with the hungry;
in Lent do not refuse to do good.
Deprive yourself and give to those who are hungry and are in need;
obtain for yourself two treasures for the rest of Lent and sanctify two mouths:
the mouth that fasts and the one you nourish from your table.
Fast in the presence of the Lord, in justice and holiness;
do not be stingy with anyone in need;
to your treasure add a treasure which never passes away;
in this Lent do not allow yourself to be greedy in eating,
but do good, and practice alms-giving in view of the kingdom of God.
Glory to the Father, who accepts our good works;
adoration to the Son, who has taught us to love him;
thanksgiving to the Holy Spirit, who rewards those who fast and give alms.
May Christ, who accepted the fasting of our ancestors,
accept our fasting and our prayer and have mercy on us.
Exalt, O Lord, the memory of your Mother and of your saints;
through their prayers grant pardon to us and our deceased.
Through the prayers of your Mother, the prophets, apostles and martyrs,
watch over the living, and in your mercy forgive those who have died.
