1/15 St. Peter in Chains Evening

MEMORIAL OF AN APOSTLE Ramsho

INTRODUCTION

DOXOLOGY

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as we begin and until we conclude.
May mercy and compassion be poured forth upon us
in this world and the next.
O Lord, our God, to you be glory for ever. Amen.

OPENING PRAYER
Lord God,
may we celebrate the memory of the holy apostles
with clear consciences and pure souls.
They bore the good news to the ends of the earth
and have proclaimed your name before Israel and the nations.
By their prayers, protect us from evil and its power
and make us worthy of the good things that you promised them in your kingdom.
With them we will give you glory and honor,
now and for ever. Amen.

GREETING
Peace be with the Church and her children.

PRAISE OF THE ANGELS

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

Praise the Lord all you nations,
glorify him all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
and peace on earth and good will to all.

PSALMODY
FIRST PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Lord,
you chose your twelve apostles and granted them
the Holy Spirit.
You gave them the power to cure the sick, guide
peoples and teach the nations.
Grant us by their prayers
and especially those of your apostles Saint N.,
whose memorial we celebrate today,
their apostle zeal
and make us participants in their heavenly joy,
and we will glorify you,
now and for ever. Amen.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Antiphon:
Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name give glory.

Psalm 115
Not to us, O LORD, not to us
but to your name give glory
because of your kindness, because of your truth.

Why should the pagans say,
“Where is their God?”

Our God is in heaven;
whatever he wills, he does.

Their idols are silver and gold,
the handiwork of men.

They have mouths but speak not;
they have eyes but see not;

The have ears but hear not;
they have noses but smell not;

They have hands but feel not;
they have feet but walk not;
they utter no sound from their throat.

Their makers shall be like them,
everyone that trusts in them.

The house of Israel trusts in the LORD;
he is their help and their shield.

The house of Aaron trusts in the LORD;
he is their help and their shield.

Those who fear the LORD trust in the LORD;
he is their help and their shield.

The LORD remembers us and will bless us;
he will bless the house of Israel;
he will bless the house of Aaron;

He will bless those who fear the LORD,
both the small and the great.

May the LORD bless you more and more,
both you and your children.

May you be blessed by the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

Heaven is the heaven of the LORD,
but the earth he has given to the children of men.

It is not the dead who praise the LORD,
nor those who go down into silence;

But we bless the LORD,
both now and for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Antiphon:
Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name give glory.

SECOND PRAYER
Lord, have mercy on us and save us.
Lord,
grant joy to your holy Church on the day of the memorial of your pure apostles,

especially on the feast of your apostle Saint N., whom you have established as shepherd of your flock.
Through his intercession keep your Church from all division and rebellion,
that she may praise and glorify you,
now and for ever. Amen.

EVENING PSALMS
Psalm 141: 1-4
O LORD, to you I call; hasten to me;
hearken to my voice when I call upon you;

Let my prayer come like incense before you;
the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice.

O LORD, set a watch before my mouth,
a guard at the door of my lips.

Let not my heart incline to the evil
of engaging in deeds of wickedness

With men who are evildoers;
and let me not partake of their dainties.

Psalm 142
With a loud voice I cry out to the LORD;
with a loud voice I beseech the LORD.

My complaint I pour out before him;
before him I lay bare my distress.

When my spirit is faint within me,
you know my path.

In the way along which I walk
they have hid a trap for me.

I look to the right to see,
but there is no one who pays me heed.

I have lost all means of escape;
there is no one who cares for my life.

I cry out to you, O LORD:
I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

Attend to my cry,
for I am brought low indeed.

Rescue me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me.

Lead me forth from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.

The just shall gather around me
when you have been good to me.

Psalm 119: 105-112
A lamp to my feet is your word,
a light to my path.

I resolve and swear
to keep your just ordinances.

I am very much afflicted;
O LORD, give me life according to your word.

Accept, O LORD, the free homage of my mouth,
and teach me your decrees.

Though constantly I take my life in my hands,
yet I forget not your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but from your precepts I have not strayed.

Your decrees are my inheritance forever;
the joy of my heart they are.

I intend in my heart to fulfill your statutes
always to the letter.

Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!

For steadfast is his mercy towards us,
and the truth of the Lord endures for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Alleluia.
[SOOGHITO/HYMN]

HOOSOYO
PROEMION
Praise, glory and honor to the eternal Son,
Sun of Justice and guide,
he has taught wisdom to the simple, granted knowledge to the poor and given joy to the Church on its feasts.
To him, the Good One, is due glory and honor this evening, and all the days of our lives,
now and for ever. Amen.

SEDRO
The apostles of the gospel, carries of good news, and guides of the people
scattered the darkness of error by the teaching of truth.
They implanted in our hearts the virtues of faith, hope and love, and endured shipwrecks, prison, torture and persecution for the sake of their mission.
In witness to Christ and his resurrection, they sacrificed their lives and shed their blood;
their death has gained for them the crown of glory and eternal life.
O God,
you crown your just ones with holiness and reward your apostles with glory,
accept the fragrance of our incense and our prayers on this day of the memorial of your apostles Saint N.
Grant us his apostolic zeal;
guide us in the way of his holiness;

make us imitate his virtues and follow in his footsteps.
Following his example, may we worship you alone,
proclaim your glory by our conduct
and teach your truth.
In this world and the next, we will praise you,
now and for ever. Amen.

QOLO
The Lord chose twelve apostles and gave them power to cure sickness of the body and of the soul. Their names are written in the book of life.

Our Savior sent them to announce to all the nations: “Possess nothing on the earth, neither gold, nor silver, nor money in your bags, nor traveling bag, nor sandals, nor staff.”

Thus they will go and behold that the world celebrates the glorious day of their memory. May God help us through their prayers.

ETRO
Apostles that Christ has enlightened b y his light and guidance, you have illumined the peoples, guided the nations and led us to the knowledge of the truth.
Obtain for us, from Christ in whose name you have preached, his abundant mercy
and we will glorify him, his Father and his Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

READINGS
MAZMOORO
The apostles went to the ends of the earth to proclaim your Word, and bore witness to your name, shedding their blood and interceding for us.

From the mountain tops they announced your good news and gave you glory. You placed Simon Peter as the foundation of the Church, the rock of the faith.

God, you accepted the offerings of the just, in your loving kindness, accept our worship and receive us in your love.

SCRIPTURE READING
A Reading from the Gospel of John
John 1: 35-51
The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” which is translated Anointed. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Kephas”
which is translated Peter. The next day he decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” But Nathanael said to him,
“Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him.” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

SUPPLICATION
O Lord of night and Master of all time, hear our supplication and have mercy on us.

You reconciled heaven and earth, grant peace to your Church and keep her children in the light of the cross.

The apostles went into the world to spread the light of truth and to scatter the darkness or error. They are the trustees of the secrets of the King, called to his wedding feast; they are like fountains which give forth blessings, lights in the center of the sky.

The twelve went to spread the good news: like lights, they shine in the sky. The twelve went throughout the world to
spread the light of their teaching and to plant the good seed in the earth.

They sowed faith in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, put the nations under the yoke of the cross and preach the resurrection of the Son of God. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, the Trinity glorified. for ever.

The Virgin Mary, your Mother, the apostles, prophets and martyrs intercede for us; O God through their prayers, strengthen the weak, comfort the sick, grant pardon to the deceased and forgive the faults of us poor sinners.

Exalt, O Lord, the memory of your Mother and your saints; through their prayers grant pardon to us and our deceased.
Through the prayers of your Mother, the prophets, apostles, and martyrs, watch over the living and in your mercy, forgive those who have died.
