world and the next.

Lord God,
be for us a perpetual morning,
a light that never dims,
a day without sunset
Then we shall be illuminated by the light of your holy
commandment, in our feelings, thoughts and desires.
Our Lord and God, to you be glory for ever.
Peace be with the Church and her children.
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace on earth and good will to all.

now and for ever.

for the glory of your name and the sake of your majesty,
awaken the souls of those who have departed from us in the faith.
Forgive all the sins and faults they have committed
and grant them repose in your dwelling of light.
To you we shall give glory,
now and for ever.

within your gates, O Jerusalem—

Jerusalem, built as a city

To Jerusalem the tribes go up
the tribes of the Lord,

According to the decree for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.

In it are set up judgment seats,
seats for the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
May those who love you prosper!

May peace be within your walls,
prosperity in your buildings.

Because of my relatives and friends
I will say, “Peace be within you!”

Because of the house of the Lord, our God,
I will pray for your good.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.

The Light of the just and joy of the upright is Christ Jesus,
our Lord.
Begotten of the Father, he manifested Himself to us.
He came to rescue us from darkness and to fill us with the
radiance of his light.

Day is dawning upon us; the power of darkness is fading away.
From the true Light there arises from us the light which illumines our darkened eyes.
His glory shines upon the world and enlightens the very depths of the abyss.
Death is annihilated, night has vanished, and the gates of Sheol are broken.

Let us light our lamps and go forth to meet him.
Let us find our joy in him, for he has found joy in us.

Let us glorify the majesty of the Son and give thanks to
the almighty Father, who,

you sea monsters and all depths;

Fire and hail, snow and midst,
storm winds that fulfill his word;
You mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and all you cedars;
You wild beasts and all tame animals,
you creeping things and you winged fowl.
Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princess and all the judges of the earth,
Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys,
Praise the name of the Lord,

Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.

of praise in the assembly of the faithful.

and he adorns the lowly with victory.
Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing joy upon their couches;
Let the high praises of God be in their throats.

A Reading from the First Book of Samuel
1 Samuel 8:1-11, 19-22
In his old age Samuel appointed his sons judges over Israel. His first-born was named Joel, his second son, Abijah; they judged at Beer-sheba. His sons did not follow his example but sought illicit gain and accepted bribes, perverting justice. Therefore, all the elders of Israel came in a body to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, “Now that your are old, and your sons do not follow your example, appoint a king over us, as other nations have, to judge us.”
Samuel was displeased when they asked for a king to judge them. He prayed to the Lord, however, who said in answer: “Grant the people’s every request. It is not you they reject, they are rejecting me as their king. As they have treated me constantly from the day I brought them up from Egypt to this day, deserting me and worshipping strange gods, so do they treat you too.
Now grant their request; but at the same time, warn them solemnly and inform them of the rights of the king who will rule them.”
Samuel delivered the message of the Lord in full to those who were asking him for a king.
He told them: “The rights of the king who will rule you will be as follows: He will take your sons and assign them to his chariots and horses, and they will run before his chariot.”
The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel’s warning and said, “Not so! There must be a king over us. We too must be like other nations, with a king to rule us and to lead us in warfare and fight our battles.” When Samuel had listened to all the people had to say, he repeated it to the Lord, who then said to him, “Grant their request and appoint a king to rule them.”
Samuel thereupon said to the men of Israel, “Each of you go to his own city.”
